Hairfood Co. BlogCon Meet-up
Hairfood Co., Philippines’ fast growing hair care brand recently held a blog conference in Cagayan de Oro to share the brand’s mission to the bloggers who attended the mini conference.
Though I have been using the products (Shampoo, Conditioner, essential oils such as the argan, rosehip, sunflower, and the weekend oil), I didn’t want to let the opportunity of hearing what they have to share about the brand so I was definitely grateful to have been invited to the event. It was such an eye opener and we all went home filled with knowledge about the brand and most of all, the chemicals we unknowingly put onto our hair/body that actually harms us, jeopardizing our health. Interesting!
Because hairfood co is focused on producing haircare products that does not result to eventual hair damage and health hazzards, I think it was great that they went their way to educating us about the main contents of the hair products we commonly use. I wasn’t really big in checking what’s in the hair products I use but after the blogcon, I realized I should be more vigilant to every product’s content regardless if it’s food or personal effects. It’s alarming how naive most of us are, and how we unconsciously put our health to peril by using hair products that contains Paraben and Sulfates.
Paraben and Sulfates? WTH are those? Well, to help you understand better, Here’s a short info about them.
The Truth About Paraben and Sulfates
What is Sulfate?
When you wash your hair with most shampoos, you will most likely work up a thick lather (love it! right?). This thick lather that many of us love to see or feel, is actually produced by the sodium lauryl sulfate placed in the shampoo. Sodium lauryl is a detergent and crystalline salt of sulfated lauryl alcohol. Sodium lauryl sulfate is a sulfactant; a sulfactant is a product that reduces surface tension between a liquid and a solid. This reduction in surface tension is what produces the rich lather. Once surface tension is removed, the barrier between your hair and the shampoo is eliminated, enabling the sodium lauryl sulfate to rid the hair of oil and dirt.
What are Parabens?
Parabens are used to preserve many shampoos’ shelf life. It is a preservative and it is used to prevent the growth of bacterial and fungus in shampoos. There are many different types of parabens, namely, butylparaben, ethylparaben, methylparaben, propylparaben, and isobutylparaben. For over seventy years they have been used as preservatives but recently scientists have begun to question their safety. Sulfates are known irritants that are harsh on the scalp and hair. Recent studies have found it to be more toxic than previously realized. Parabens can cause allergic reactions and exacerbate some skin conditions. With all the doubt being cast on the safety of sulfates and parabens, it is wise to switch to a sulfate and paraben free shampoo.
Me with the beautiful ladies from Hairfood Co. and Hairfood Co ambassador Vic (vicmadz.com)
Why switching to Sulfate and Paraben free Shampoos is beneficial:
Sulfate may have the ability to get rid of oil and dirt but recent studies have found that it is toxic and carcinogenic. Sulfate has been found to be one of the key culprits of hair loss and thinning hair, it actually destroys hair follices and inhibits growth.
Increased levels of estrogen causes breast cancer an it has been found that parabens actually attach themselves to estrogen receptors, the result that paraben causes a weak estrogen effect on the body. This is why they are referred to as phyoestrogens. This may or may not cause breast cancel depending on which research you believe but why take the risk? When you can simply switch to paraben free shampoos.
Parabens have been linked to the irritation of skin conditions such as dermatitis and rosacea. It also causes allergic reactions in some small children.
I can go on and on but I leave it all up to you ladies to search and actually learn more about these chemicals we put into our system EVERYDAY!
