So the judges have spoken as they said and named the Twenty-year-old Olivia Culpo Miss Universe 2012 beating probably the crowd’s favorite Ms. Philippines Janine Tugonon and 3 other beauties from Brazil, Australia and Venezuela. I watched Miss Universe 2012 from beginning to the end (thanks to the online live streaming) and I swear I have never been tensed watching a pageant before the way I did when the Top 10 was announced! I was tweeting updates and my hands were literally shaking while tweeting! It only stopped when Ms. Philippines was called (last!). From there, we all saw the confidence Ms. Philippines have shown as she strutted her stuff on the stage. And then there’s the Top 5 and ones again Ms. Philippines was called and I knew right then and there Janine Tugonon will bring home the crown. For me, her answer to the question by judge Nigel Barker sealed the deal! Twitter has gone wild, Filipinos tweeted positive words after she said her piece. I literally prayed for God to give her the Wisdom to answer the question well, and God did just that. Here’s her question:
Nigel Barker: As an international ambassador, do u believe thatspeaking English shud be a prerequisite to being Miss. Universe why, why not?
Janine Tugunon: For me .. being a miss universe is not just about knowing how to speak a specific language, it’s being able to influence and inspire other people. So whatever language you have, as long as the heart to serve and you have a Strong mind to show to people then you can be Miss Universe
Everyone were expecting Ms. Philippines to bring home the crown (well at least most Filipinos and probably some foreigners) after that excellent and honest answer. Unfortunately though, the judges thought otherwise and gave the much coveted crown to Ms. USA. I was disappointed, we all were disappointed because Janine’s answer was way sensible than Ms. USA’s answer. Too bad, the judges decision is final and unlike our elections, we cannot demand for a recount :D. Ms. USA might have the crown but for us, for most of those who witnessed the pageant, Miss Philippines-Janine Tugonon won!
As Janine Tugonon said – “If I win, it’s like I gave the Filipinos hope and happiness, and a Christmas Gift this coming December 25”. You really did lift our spirits and gave us a boost despite the turmoil we had to go through and is still going through. You are our Queen, our Miss Universe and the whole nation is so proud of you! Mabuhay ka Ms. Janine Tugonon!
