Trailblazing Champions: The Philippine National Trail Running Championships Showcase Top Talent

The Philippine National Trail Running Championships recently concluded in Danao City, Cebu, and it was a thrilling display of endurance, skill, and sheer determination. From seasoned veterans to rising stars, athletes from across the country battled challenging terrain to claim national titles. On March 22-23, 2025, Danao City’s “Seven Peaks” became the stage for an epic showdown. The event, sanctioned by the Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association, adhered to both local and international standards, ensuring a fair and competitive race for all.

Long Trail – 80K Highlights

Elizabeth Dangadang and Angelie Cabalo continued their impressive streak in the women’s division, delivering record-setting performances. On the men’s side, 25-year-old Joebert Elmaquin emerged victorious, breaking away from Godwin Mirar near the finish. Two-time champion Larry Apolinario secured third place, showcasing the depth of talent in the men’s field.

Short Trail Showdowns

The Short Trail category saw intense competition. 19-year-old Romnick Tongkaling defended his title in the men’s race, finishing ahead of teammate Randolf Gonzales and newcomer Gabriel Mirar.

In the women’s race, 22-year-old Joy Beltran took the win with a commanding performance, followed by national team member Noime Fernandez and Ann Doplon, who celebrated her first championship podium.

U23 Category: The Future is Bright

The U23 category highlighted the next generation of trail running stars. 19-year-old Ken Oliver Libo-on won the men’s race, while 15-year-old Cessa Monterde dominated the women’s field. These young athletes demonstrated incredible potential, promising a bright future for Philippine trail running.

  • Women: Cessa Monterde (Bukidnon), Evan Sitoy (Bukidnon), Charlotte Muyco (South Cotabato)

Beyond the Competition

The championships also included an Open Category, attracting 600 runners for the Danao City International Ultra Trail. Renowned trail runner John Ray Onifa won the 100K category, adding to the event’s excitement. Danao City’s Head of Tourism, First Councilor Ivy Durano, emphasized the city’s commitment to adventure sports and the “Seven Peaks,” ideal for trail running.

Sports Development Head Paolo Sybico highlighted Danao City’s history of producing national athletes and expressed confidence that trail running could become a key sport for the city. Tin Ferrera, Vice President and Secretary General of PHILTRA, noted the surge of new and young athletes, which has made the event more competitive and ensures the continued development of the talent pool. The Philippine National Trail Running Championships proved to be a celebration of athleticism, determination, and the vibrant trail running community in the Philippines. These champions, both men and women, have earned their place in the spotlight, inspiring others to push their limits and embrace the trails.
